Genki Environmental Initiatives
Genki Japanese and Culture School is committed to reducing our impact on the environment, and using our position as a leader in the Japanese language field to promote environmental consideration among all related stakeholders. This page lists some of the actions we are taking, and the initiatives we support. We constantly reassess these initiatives to further strengthen them. Many of these initiatives were begun in April 2022, though some started earlier.
Harm Reduction Measures
We track resource usage, and commit to reducing usage on a per-student basis each year. Resources tracked include electricity, water, paper, travel, and trash.
We recycle to the maximum extent. We provide multiple trash
cans in each location. Trash is divided into the following
categories for recycling:
Plastics and glass | Metals and ceramics | Paper and cardboard | Computers and electronics | Resale items
We track the amount of trash generated and try to reduce
on a per-student basis.
We repair items
when feasible.
We use non-toxic products whenever possible, including cleaning products.
General Measures
We buy environmentally friendly and sustainable products where alternatives exist at similar cost/quality.
We buy locally produced items where alternatives exist at similar cost/quality.
We avoid buying disposable items.
We provide cups/mugs for students, and water filters on faucets, to reduce the use of bottled drinks at some locations.
We provide cutlery/tableware for staff, to reduce staff use of disposable items.
We provide an area at our schools for students to leave unneeded items for other students to take.
We work with environmental organizations such as WWOOF Japan.
We encourage staff and students to use public transport or bicycles to commute.
We use an online Learning Management System for some student homework and class materials, and provide digital devices to teachers, to reduce paper usage. Classrooms use digital whiteboard technology.
